Clearwater Chinese School

Each character word is its own single syllable sound, its own inflection. Chinese raise or lower their voice volume rather than inflection (tone) for emphasis. Character words joined together in pairs are spoken in pairs, forming a single meaning word. See pronunciation links below.

(1} -- long tone, like holding a note.
(2) -- rising, upward inflection, tapers off.
(3) -- down and up, starts low, falls then rises in inflection.
(4) -- falling, sharp falling inflection, said with finality.
(no number) -- unstressed.
